Brian REYNOLDS sent me this prospectus for Junior Evening Institutes, for the academic year 1936-37. It’s been fascinating, particularly comparing it with the 1938 directory and the 1911 census. The prospectus lists centres where evening classes ran, and the names of the headteachers (see below). The purpose of the Junior Evening Institutes was: providing scholars who have just left the day school with the opportunity of continuing the general intellectual training they have already begin, and of obtaining instruction in the special subjects, knowledge of which is necessary for success in the occupations they have entered or intend to enter.
Courses were classed as ‘technical’ (for boys), ‘commercial (bor boys and girls), general and domestic (gender not specified!).
Classes at Junior Institutes were open to all boys and girls over the age of 14 who did not attend day school; some day children who were due to leave later in the year were able to attend with special permission. Children whose conduct and progress were satisfactory, who attended regularly were awarded free Studentships.
