Just finished this one. This is a big help, because 1871 is a census on which I have little information. There are almost 430 teachers listed here.
Teachers listed in 1873 Directory
In most cases, only Heads of Household are listed; therefore there are lots of sons, daughters, brothers and sisters, lodgers and boarders who are omitted from this list. I will therefore later cross-reference with the 1871 census. It will still be way off a full list for 1871, but much more substantial than at present.
I have not listed Music, Dancing or Language academies, and have similarly omitted Navigation and most Commercial schools. All schools listed as Day, Boarding or academies are here. It is interesting to look at the types of provision listed. Lots and lots of Ladies’ Schools / Ladies’ Seminaries. Many small schools in private houses - reminiscent of what Pip experienced in Great Expectations, I should imagine. By 1881 teachers were beginning to list themselves as ‘certificated’, but this system had not been introduced widely by 1873 so there is no way of telling the status of most. Liverpool had little capacity for teacher training until 1876.
Analysis to be completed once the 1871 listing is complete.
Hope you find this useful!
