The school has its own history page.

The first headteacher was one Eli CROSSLEY, born in Halifax. In 1881, he and his family were living in Lombard Street. By 1891, still Head, they were in Argyle Rd. Another early teacher / benefactor was Gertrude LANGTON (see bottom right)

Listed as a boys’ school in 1894; both girls and boys in 1900, boys only in 1911.  Caretaker then was Edward HAYHURST.  There was a Technical Instruction Centre too.  Terry HEATH tells me that in the 1930s / 40s it was a "Central" School, open only to boys who passed the Liverpool Education Board's Junior City Scholarship (11+). The mandatory school coat was black with white piping along edges and a SMA badge on the breast pocket.  Head in the late 1950s was Mr GRIMSHAW (thanks to Ailsa for this).  The school moved to Aigburth Rd, next to St Anne’s Church, in 1963.

Gertrude LANGTON was born in 1834, daughter of Liverpool banker Joseph LANGTON (born Kirkham, 1793, died Liverpool 1852) and his wife Anne, nee EARLE (born Liverpool 1799, died Liverpool 1875). She was christened at St Peter’s, Liverpool in September of 1835, just before her 1st birthday.  In 1841 she and her family were living in Brecklands, close to Breckfield Cottages.  By 1851, Gertrude was listed as living in Norfolk Crescent, Paddington, London, at a ‘Ladies’ Private School’ run by Mary Ann DUTTON. It is not clear whether she is a student or a member of staff, but she was more likely a student.    Her family were living at 12 Abercromby Square; when Gertrude returned to Liverpool she continued to live there - in 1871 with her mother, but as head of Household in 1881 with lots of servants!  She is listed married.  She is listed at the same address in 1891 and 1911 - always with lots of servants and ‘living on her own means’. I can’t find her in 1861, though!

Below: thanks to Marge for this picture.  The school was still at Anfield at this time.
