Alderwood opened as a County Primary School on August 25th 1953. Headteacher Doris May JACKSON had a team of thirteen active reserve and probationers. 547 children were admitted in the first week. By mid September there were 616 children on roll, and the school borrowed a number of (very old!) desks from Heygreen Rd. By the end of the half-term the headteacher noted that there was a happy atmosphere, staff had ‘put up cheerfully with many inconveniences’ but there was no piano! The pianos eventually arrived in December - but too late to save the carol concert, which had been cancelled the day before they arrived!
